Amidst the fire and bravado of his Piano Concertos and surging decadence of his Symphonies, there quietly lies what is possibly the greatest treasure of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s output: The All-Night Vigil. It is one of the greatest works written for a cappella choir and represents the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox music. Full of luxuriant beauty and thoughtful repose, the work also features authentic use of the archaic Znamenny chant and Rachmaninoff’s near-perfect “conscious counterfeits”. The notoriety of its use of oktavists and prominence of the lower voices make this a work that is rarely performed in Asia: it has never been performed in its entirety by a Singaporean choir—until now. The Philharmonic Chamber Choir is proud to present Sergei Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil in this year of celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Russian Federation.
